Duke Lottery Pick Facing Charges

Duke freshman and likely NBA lottery pick, Paolo Banchero along with Duke scholarship player Micheal Savarino, also known as Coach Al’s grandson, are facing DWI charges after a traffic stop on Sunday morning. Savarino, age 20, was driving and pulled over for a stop sign violation around 1 in the morning on Sunday. The officer observed signs of impairment and made the arrest. Savarino was found to have a blood alcohol level of .08 and will face a court date on December 9th. Banchero was a passenger and is facing aiding and abetting DWI charges which in the state of North Carolina can result in up to 2 months in jail. His court date is set for December 8th.

Both players game status for their Tuesday night contest against Gardner Webb has not been announced. Coach K released a statement about the two players. “We are reviewing a legal matter involving two members of the men’s basketball team,” Krzyzewski said in a statement released by Duke athletics to the N&O. “Any further actions as a result of this situation will ultimately be determined by the Vice President/Director of Athletics and University officials.”

All details come from Raleigh News and Observer. Updates will be given as soon as possible.
