Duke freshman and likely NBA lottery pick, Paolo Banchero along with Duke scholarship player Micheal Savarino, also known as Coach Al’s grandson, are facing DWI charges after a traffic stop on Sunday morning. Savarino, age 20, was driving and pulled over for a stop sign violation around 1 in the morning on Sunday. The officer observed signs of impairment and made the arrest. Savarino was found to have a blood alcohol level of .08 and will face a court date on December 9th. Banchero was a passenger and is facing aiding and abetting DWI charges which in the state of North Carolina can result in up to 2 months in jail. His court date is set for December 8th.
Both players game status for their Tuesday night contest against Gardner Webb has not been announced. Coach K released a statement about the two players. “We are reviewing a legal matter involving two members of the men’s basketball team,” Krzyzewski said in a statement released by Duke athletics to the N&O. “Any further actions as a result of this situation will ultimately be determined by the Vice President/Director of Athletics and University officials.”
